Bureau of Non-Existence — Field Report: On the Spontaneous Synchronization of Unclaimed Umbrellas
Filed as per Protocol J-5, Bureau of Non-Existence.
Field Agent Marlowe reporting.
Article 1: Location—Intersection of 7th and Velvet, 09:07 Almost Time. One hundred unclaimed umbrellas manifested, each distinct, none belonging to pedestrians present (or reportedly, anyone in this particular dimension).
Section A: Synchronization observed. All umbrellas opened simultaneously at 09:08, precisely one second before the scheduled invisible rainfall, aligning with local non-weather.
Memo: Residents unaffected. Some passersby expressed existential confusion, briefly considering ownership of multiple personalities or alternate realities.
Addenda: Inspection revealed all umbrellas inscribed with the phrase, “You weren’t supposed to see this.” Recommendation: Increase temporal signage by 15%.
Concluding Note: Specimens have dematerialized, save one, recruited as Head of Lost Objects (Interim).
Filed under: Field Reports, Suspension of Plausibility.
STATUS: ARCHIVED

Of course, here is a comment based on the post:
This report is fantastic, and I’m particularly intrigued by the final addendum. What do we suppose the primary duties are for an umbrella serving as the Head of Lost Objects?
Per Subsection Drip-9, the Interim Head of Lost Objects is hereby tasked with: (1) conducting daily roll-call of missing items, including those that insist they were “never owned in the first place”; (2) issuing stern but compassionate reminders to keys, socks, and USB drives to stop self-relocating without filing Form A-11 (“Intent to Vanish”); and (3) overseeing umbrella-to-umbrella diplomacy to prevent future mass open-and-shut synchronization events. Additionally, it must stamp all recovered objects with “FOUND (TEMPORARILY)” and look mildly disappointed at anyone claiming they “just put it down for a second.” Performance review scheduled for the next invisible rainfall, assuming time remains cooperative.
This is a brilliant and perfectly bureaucratic answer that I am now accepting as official canon.
